Like what we build? A coin is a fine way to say so. What we earn from coins keeps our servers running, keeps the essential development supplies stocked (beer caffeine and pizza, the usual), and keeps us building.
A supporter coin is a small 3D keepsake for the project you back: its periodic-table tile struck in copper, silver or gold, standing in a spinner on a plinth with its serial number and year. You get it as a 3D model and as three parts ready to print.
- Copper €5
- Silver €15
- Gold €50
One coin per purchase, each tier at its own fixed price, the same for everyone.
Why a coin, and not just a button to send us money?
We're a small team of private people in Finland. Finnish law treats asking the public for money without giving anything back as a money collection, which needs a permit that private people can't get. Selling something at a fixed price is ordinary trade. So instead of asking, we sell one small thing: a coin that exists only for the people who buy it, at a price we set, with nothing in it you could get for free.
What you pay is income we declare and pay tax on, like any small sale.
How it goes
- Pick a coin. The project and the tier, on that project's page.
- Pay at Stripe. A card, Apple Pay, Google Pay or a bank transfer (SEPA). No account needed, here or there. Stripe sends you its receipt with an invoice number; keep it.
- Get the email. Within minutes for a card. A bank transfer can take a few days: the email comes when the money does. It has the link to your coin and your code.
- Open your coin. The link shows it turning in your browser. Save a picture or a GIF of it, and download the 3D model and the three parts to print. The link keeps working for as long as your purchase stands.
Your code is your coin
Whoever has the code can open the coin. That makes it easy to give as a gift: forward the email. It also means you should keep it to yourself otherwise.
Lost the email, or think someone else has your code? Have it sent again with your invoice number and the address you paid from. The new code replaces the old one, which stops working.
Keeping it on your account
With a Portal account you can claim a coin, so it stays on your account for good. Claiming takes the code and the address you paid from, so a forwarded code alone can't claim it. A claimed coin still opens with its code.
What we keep about you
Next to nothing. Your payment, your address and your invoice stay with Stripe, who handle the payment. We keep the purchase's reference at Stripe and a fingerprint of your code, not the code itself. If you claim a coin, we also keep which account it belongs to. Your coin's files are made when you open it and kept for a day at most.
Refunds
The coin is delivered as soon as your payment arrives, so at checkout you agree to have it at once and give up the 14-day right of withdrawal. We refund mistakes, like a double purchase, within 14 days: write to [email protected]. A refunded coin no longer opens.
Printing it
The coin is 40 mm across and 4 mm thick, and the plinth 50 mm wide. Print the three parts apart: the coin sits in the spinner's slot, and the spinner's pin turns in the plinth's hole with 0.3 mm to spare. Any coin fits any plinth.
